We Slept With Our Boots On (3-star)

Steve Carlson has war experience of 3 years. He joined the United States Army in October 2000. He was then reported to D Company 1st battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg North Carolina. He was discharged from the Army in 2003.

As a soldier, Steve has experienced the harsh realities and the brutal killings, hence he is trying to imply that you will forever be emotionally and or physically scarred by the experience of war, whether as a bystander or a fighter. “Everyone loses their innocence when they carry guns” is a prime example on how you change because of war. “When they carry guns” is actually referring to killing people, hence the killer will forever be in guilt.

The title itself could suggest Steve’s war time experience. Sleeping with one’s boots on could show that they were in a state of great anxiety and could not sleep in peace. They could also mean that the soldiers were prepared for any situation, in this case it could be an ambush. Hence the title could tell us how bad the situation was.

The point of view of the poem is from the first person’s point of view. This is used so as to show their emotions, actions and personal feelings. Other than “I”, “we” is also used, both are used to show how the majority feel during war, in this case it refers to the terror faced. Thus using a first person’s point of view may show what war is like and we should avoid it.

A literary device used is repetition. Examples could be, "I kept pulling the trigger and reloading and pulling some more ... Dirty and tired and hungry and scared". The use of "and" shows an endless list of how tiring and horrific war is. “I kept pulling the trigger and reloading and pulling some more.” Shows that one has to keep killing people without mercy to stay alive, and endure the bad things of war.

Steve Carlsen also uses a rhyme scheme of “ABAB”. This could be to enhance the mood of the poem, such as “blood” and “mud”. The words that rhyme are mostly on the negative side, where blood could mean injuries or death while mud could mean dirtiness. Hence the use of the rhyme scheme could be to enhance the poem.

Metaphors are also used. The example is “The majestic mountains so steep, so high that they kiss the skies.” This is a metaphor that the mountains are hard and high, impossible for them to climb. The part where the mountains “kiss the skies” shows how tall it is, and could mean a gruesome and tough climb for the soldiers.

Setting was also used. The Hindu Kush is a mountain range stretching between north-western Pakistan and eastern and central Afghanistan with a highest elevation of 7708m and stretching for 500 miles. This could mean the cold war, where the United States were at war with Pakistan and Afghanistan. This could also show that the difficulty of the war, since they were so high above ground level and in a treacherous mountain, showing the danger.

Steve Carlsen used many literary devices to bring out the warlike scene, such as repetition and imagery. He has also gone through war itself, and possibly this poem could be his life experience as it is a very realistic showing of war.

I feel that one should not take part in war. War is a devastating thing, nobody wins, only losses are gained. Steve Carlsen had showed this in his poem, where nobody would win and most would lose their lives. Hence I feel that we should not engage in war as it will only cause more suffering than good.

Friday 5/3

Events in school.
Hi! Yesterday, the A-levels results came out, and the whole nation was abuzz with excitement. Not to mention Hwachong as well :). We were all hoping for great results. Indeed the results -were so good, that we get a half-day for the school! We were all very happy. Not only because of the half-day but also happy for those who scored really well. The best part is Hwa Chong fared better than RI (no offence to RI-ians):)! This meant that Hwa Chong was best in the whole nation. This I feel is a great achievement we can all be proud of. The results are really good and it has inspired me to do well too. This can also mean more half-days :) (just joking) ! I think this is the benchmark that we all can follow, someday I hope that I can do that well for my A-levels. So far, it has been a great term 1 and I am currently awaiting all of my results. Till my next post. BYE :D

To Kill a Mockingbird(MI)

Is Maycomb a good place to live in? Is Maycomb corrupted?
[focus on 2 main themes: Courage and Prejudice]

After doingthe MI test, my 2nd and 3rd MI is Kinaesthetic and Linguistic respectively. For Kinaesthetic(Intrapersonal), I have chosen to do "Write a diary entry for a major character of the novel" . As for Linguistic, I will be doing "Imagine you are one of the characters. Deliver a speech on what you think of the above question".

Kinaesthetic - Diary Entry (scout)

September 5th 1933
Dear diary, today was an unexpected day. It made me both sad and confused. How could this have had happened? I felt this was too unfair, too unkind. The trial I had attended today has changed my perception of the people of Maycomb. I cannot believe that white people are so prejudiced against the blacks. I do not see the reason why. We are all of the same kind, yet we have what they call segregation. This meant lesser friends for us, lesser help from them. Till now, I still cannot believe that Tom Robinson was not acquitted even though he spoke the truth. However, he was still convicted because he was black, the minority. I am deeply saddened by this. I wish that we would not experience any more of this discrimination against the blacks, or niggers as they call it.

September 8th 1933
Dear diary, up till now, I still cannot forget the trial of Tom Robinson. I had faith that Atticus would win the case, but it was all for nothing. I could tell that Tom Robinson was really determined to win. He was really courageous to speak his mind, against the whites. I felt that this really inspired me to be like him. To never give up no matter what. I think Atticus was mighty brave too. He was fighting till the end as well. Even though he was against the odds, he still stood to fight. He was also defending a black man, where the chances of winning were zero. He definitely has shown me what courage is all about. Someday, I hope that I can someday be just like him.

Linguistic - Speech (Atticus)

(During trial)
We are all equal. Nobody should be discriminated. We are all people. We must give them a fighting chance. We must not be prejudiced against them. Maycomb is our homeland, what we do affects all of us, even the verdict of this trial will affect us.
We, in Maycomb, have never witnessed any major changes, we go about with the same lifestyle, the same mindsets. What we do wrong is that we hate the black people. Why? Because we are never willing to change. The past is over, now is the future. We cannot be so deep-rooted in discriminating against them. We cannot be so unkind towards them. Think, if you were one of them, how would you feel? Unhappy? Sad? Angered? That is why we should abolish the mindset of segregation.
Tom Robinson here has displayed courage just by turning up. He knows that although he will surely lose, he still turns up, hoping for a chance. The chance is decided by you. He has come to fight for justice, he is against the odds, yet he does these so willingly. Remember, all of us are equal, we are all humans, we are all the same.
Do you want other outsiders to think that Maycomb is corrupted, Maycomb is unfair, Maycomb is old. Do you want that? Nobody wants so. We want to be the best. The first step is to abolish segregation. Respect begets respect, nobody wants segregation, a loss of workmanship, a loss of helpers, a loss of friends. Nobody will win if there is segregation.

Multile Intelligences (MI) Test

From a Multiple Intelligences Test I took, I found that my Intelligences were Logical and Kinaesthtic. Logical means that I am number smart while Kinaesthetic means that I know myself well. You can assess your own MI here at this link.

My Reflections
I feel that the MI test is rather effective and the results I felt match my own views. I totally agree that my MI is Logical. I felt that I have always had an interest towards games and works related to mathematics. For instance the Rubik’s cube, I felt that this is related as it involves logical skills in solving it. It is also related to math as it requires one to make a certain number of turnings, twists etc. I feel that this is a good method to help u choose the things you should do. Let’s say you are not really inclined towards music, yet you choose to do a project on songs, this would not be very good. Hence I feel that the MI test is a useful tool to one and all.

Sec1 --- Sec2

Its been a long time since I updated this blog! The one thing is - Life in Hwa Chong is FUN, EXCITING but TIRING! :D.. It has been a year since I created this blog and its time for secondary 2! My class have 3 new additions and 2 went out. Although we were saddened, we felt that it was for theirs and our own good. We are in the Future School programme, meaning that we get to use laptops :) isn't that fun? So far we have not been using because of some issues that the people who bought the laptops from school have not recieved theirs yet. Hence the teachers have taught us the normal way for the time being, except for the occasional JITTs (Just-In-Time-Teachings).I feel that using the laptops, things will get even more difficult! Life is not a bed of roses, i can definitely agree to that... But still, all one needs is perseverance and confidence, this way one will surely succeed!
